The Early History Of Football Clothing

Monday, August 25th, 2008
history
Thomas Pretty asked:

It was in the Victorian period that football emerged as a popular sport, being somewhat regulated in 1863 when the Football Association was formed. In these early years specialised clothing was not really needed for matches, players turned up in whatever clothing was to hand, normally teams would be distinguished by the wearing of coloured scarves or caps. This period however saw football in its infancy, the rules varied depending on which public school was playing, for instance, Rugby School played rules where handling of the ball was allowed and Cambridge University and the Sheffield Club played a game where the use of hands was outlawed. Eventually this led to a split between the two forms of the game, one becoming rugby and the other football. It was at this stage that codified rules were produced.

It was in the 1870s that the first uniform kit clothing started to appear. In most cases the colours of the kits related to the school or organisation that was affiliated to the team. In the first ever FA Cup Final, which took place in 1872 the two finalists played in clothing with an eclectic mixture of colours. The Wanderers wore pink, cerise and black while their opposition the Royal Engineers (army teams regularly played in the early years) wore dark red and navy clothing. At this early stage however, players were restricted by living costs, if a player could afford a shirt in the team colours, more often than not they could play for the team. Subsequently the most popular colour was plain white, as it was the cheapest and most widely available.

It was not long before specialist sports clothing manufacturers started to arise. In 1879 Bukta began making football shirts. Shirts however is a misnomer, in this early period the clothing was often labelled as jerseys, sarks and even Guernseys. It was in 1883 that the term shirt was first used, the result of vertical striped patterns arising in many teams. At this stage the range of colours used was probably at its largest in the sport’s history. A mixture of economic and practical reasons led to the diminishing of diversity and a more general set of colours used for all kits across the land.

In terms of the bottom half of the player, originally knickerbockers; a piece of clothing that covered the knees, worn due to rules about knee coverage from the FA. In addition heavy shin guards and stockings were worn on the legs. However the rules pertaining to the covering of knees were relaxed at the turn of the century and players soon wore shorts; at this stage, the stockings on the feet of players were first regarded to be part of the kit. Colours for these items of clothing were not as diverse as the shirts, in most cases, white, black and grey were the only colours available.

In this period the materials used for clothing were hard wearing cottons that allowed for the tugging of shirts during play. It was not until the middle of the twentieth century and further regulation of the rules that lightweight shirts were introduced. Predominantly this began on the continent but eventually spread to Britain in later years. At this stage however fans and spectators rarely wore team shirts as a means of support; it was more oft the case that the crowd would have a scarf with the team colours to show support. This however changed in the latter half of the twentieth century as teams saw the monetary benefits of selling shirts to fans. Today the manufacture of replica shirts is a multi million pound industry as fans are proud to sport the attire of their favoured team.

The Origin and History of Chess

The origin of chess, shrouded in the mists of history, depends very much on one`s own perspective. We cannot, unfortunately, trace the history of chess with a bold black line that leads from the game as we know it today, to a point in the past where we can unambiguously say, “Uh ha! This is where it began!” Many ancient cultures including the Greeks, Chinese, Indians, Persians, and Arabs have staked their claims on the game`s antecedents, if not to the game itself. It is the purpose of this article to bring order out of the historical clutter surrounding the origin of chess, and to give you, the interested reader, a clear idea of its line of development.

As already intimated, it is no surprise that chess did not spring fully loaded with its pieces, boards, and rules from its point of origin to what we have today without a meandering style of evolutionary development. Recent scholarship on the history of chess would indicate that the Chinese emperor, Wu Ti (560-578), developed a game of divination called, hsiang ch`i , which is the ancient Chinese word for chess. The chessmen and their moves were patterned after the moon, planets, constellations, and the sun. This divinatory game may well have been the common ancestor of modern day Chinese chess-still widely played, and the game that took the western world, and indeed the entire world by storm. However, even taking the Chinese contributions into account, most scholars by a wide consensus place the origin of chess, at least in its modern beginnings, in India. We shall now see why this is so.

As you probably already have suspected, there is not a great deal of direct evidence for the primacy of India, for being the country of origin of chess. There is, however, a strong circumstantial case to be made. Thoughtful observers on the history of chess place its modern origins in northern India in about the fifth or sixth centuries A.D. Following the Arabic conquest of Persia, in the 7th century A.D. several of the leading Muslim scholars found chess already there, and commented that it had made its way to Persia from India. Indeed, the Persians themselves seem to support this view. In the Chatrang-namak, a series of Persian stories written in the early seventh century, chess is depicted as having arrived in Persia by way of India. But, how did Indian chess make its way to Persia? Probably through the normal activities of trade and other forms of cultural contact. By the time that the game arrived in Persia-it should be stated that there were variations of it, such as the four way game called chaturanga –not just one type, a certain type of it was being played on a 64 square board, with two players. If one were to take the linguistic evidence into consideration, then consider the following. Arabic for chess is, shatranj, which in turn comes from the Persian, chatrang, which in turn comes from the Indian (Sanskrit), chaturanga, a clear line leading back to India. Can we now say definitively where chess originated? No, but currently available evidence does seem to indicate northern India in the fifth and sixth centuries A.D.

So, for the moment, the origin and history of chess must remain inconclusive, as are so many things in human affairs. Maybe some day, with new discoveries, we shall know for certain.

A Look at a Brief History of Skiing

Muna wa Wanjiru asked:

The skiing sport requires the use of common device called skis. The skiing device helps the skier to slide on the snow with the help of ski bindings that are attached with the boots of the skier.

Skiing is completely different sport from snow shoeing. It is also different from ice skating in line skating and water skating that are played on the snow. Though the characteristics of the skiing sports are shared with the snow boarding they are generally formed from skate boarding and hence it is not treated as skiing.

The game of skiing can be classified under two categories. History of skiing says the oldest category is the Nordic skiing that has been evolved from Scandinavian skiing. Six bindings are attached to the boots of the skier in the Nordic style of skiing. The heels of the skier are not attached to any bindings. Alpine skiing has been practiced from Alps.

Both toes and heels are attached with the ski boots in Alpine bindings. The history of skiing and the binding style indicates that skiing sport is liked and enjoyed by most of the people in the world. Telemark skiing have similar elements from both the categories.

According to the history of skiing this activity was considered to be a practical way of reaching from one place to the other. Sondre Norheim has been named as the father of modern skiing. During the 19th century Norheim forcefully tried to improve the bindings that will enhance a better turn during skiing on the hill slopes.

The techniques of the skiing were re established in the year of 1970. Bindings were firm with the feet of the skier and they proved to be more effective. This paved the way for the development of Alpine and down hill skiing.

History of skiing shows that during the 20th century Hannes Schneider of Austria formulated the idea of body rotation with the help of skiing device. This Arlberg technique gained popularity throughout the world and led skiing to become a famous activity of recreation.

The oldest ski remains were found in Russia which was roughly about 8000 years old. There are mainly six ways that has paved way for the development of skiing sport. The oval wooden board called the pedal snow shoe was entirely covered with fur. The sledge runner was considered as the practical model for skiing.

According to history of skiing, moccasins and sandals were combined together and it was named as fur shoes. The marsh shoe was preferably taken to the regions that were colder. The regions in the northern areas used canoe or the coracle. There were also used as sledges and they were called proto skis.

History of skiing also shows that varieties of skis have emerged from different regions during the same time. The people of Sajan Altaic Mountains in Asia were considered to be the original inventors of the skis. There were three different types of skis in the Asia and North of Europe. Horizontal toe piece binding was commonly used in the southern regions. Vertical four holes binding with the thin board was found on the Eastern Siberia. Thus each of the types can be distinguished from each other

History of Archery and War

Shawn Burgy asked:

History of Archery and War:

When we think about how old Archery is, We may think hundreds of years. But the real truth is 25,000 to 50,000 years. Archery has played a major role in almost all civilizations, From Asia to Europe, Africa to the America’s. In past times, To modern times and beyond. Hunting to play, Archery is here to stay in some fa sit for century’s to come as well.

The historical aspects of Archery are a great rainy day lesson to the true value of the sport. It cannot be denied the fact that the Bow and Arrow were one of mans first attempts at invention. It certainly has played it’s role through the ages. In well preserved cave drawings of Archers found in Spain, to the development of Archery as one of Americas highly regarded praised sports. The bow has been found to exist in every country in the world except Australia. That is saying a lot about our development as human beings indeed.

The history and fascination of Archery is able to stand the tests of time. The Turkish peoples knew great efficiency’s in war against the Crusaders, We also know of the effectiveness of the English Yeomen in the Hundred Years War battles of Crecy, Poitiers, and Agincourt. However sadly, The introduction of firearms led to the demise of the beloved bow and arrow as a strong weapon of war, So it had faded into vogue as a recreational sport. It has continual uses through phases to present modern day Archery as we know it.

Looking into the history of Archery in the United States, We see that it begins with the American Indians. The American Indian was and is the true Archer of this continent, The Indians had to use there bow daily in search of his food and in times of warfare as his chief weapon. We can see that there is a lot to be learned from the American Indians and our own culture in our quest to learn more. But as such, The prowess as the Indian as an Archer has been greatly exaggerated. While the Indian people as a whole are marvelous hunters, Therefore a practical Archer, But was not great at target shooting from a sport standpoint. The Indians stalking ability was great though, From a stalking standpoint, He could take his prey from a close distance with almost certain effect.

In 1828 the United Bowmen of America were the first American society of Archers in the United States. It was not until after the Civil War that Archery was popularized as a sport. This new found sport was popularized by two ex-confederate soldiers, Maurice and Will Thompson. They had moved to the Everglades in Florida and lived for years by the bow, By 1878, Maurice had written what has become a classic American Archery classic, “Witchery of Archery”. It had immediate impact all over the country. People began shooting throughout the country with the bow for sport. Not long after the National Archery Association was formed with Maurice Thompson as its first president. By the early part of the 1900’s the sport had begun to fade back out of the limelight. Then a most intriguing event occurred, While 1911 found a naked, Starving Indian named Ishi who was discovered in California’s wild desert. Ishi was a living example of a Stone Age man, He was the last of the Yanas. It was Saxton Pope who discovered the significance of this weird ***** Indian. Together the Indian and Pope wrought the most complete and authoritative texts and materials on Archery traditions and techniques. As we’ve learned just here, Theres more to learn about this unique subject and sport and hunting extravaganza called Archery.

Whether your using a Shortbow, Longbow, Traditional Bow, or a Compound Bow archery is a great vehicle of information.

If its only to read and study about the history of Archery.

It still holds a lot of information and learning potential for your mind to develop on something new.
